I Smoked or Vaped Again: Reset Your Quit Plan

Use a setback to identify a difficult moment, reconnect with support, and prepare your next step.

Published October 6, 2026 · Educational content

A setback is a reason to adjust the plan.

If you smoked or vaped again, pause and look at what happened. It does not erase the effort you have made. Smokefree.gov encourages people who return to smoking to learn from the situation and reconnect with quitting support.

Review the moment without judging yourself.

  • Where were you, and who was with you?
  • Was it stress, a familiar routine, nicotine cravings, or several things?
  • What support or preparation was missing?
  • What could you change before that situation happens again?

Missing the physical action alone does not prove why you smoked or vaped. Ask for help if you are unsure what to try.

Choose one next action.

  1. Reconnect. Call your quit coach or healthcare professional.
  2. Review treatment questions. Do not independently change medicine doses based on a setback.
  3. Prepare your cue. Change your break setting or choose a practical activity for your hands or mouth.
  4. Write the adjustment. Record one response and one person to contact.
